National Mapping Initiative: U.S.

The Urban Institute’s Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy and Fourth Sector Networks are engaged in a joint project to deploy the Fourth Sector Mapping Initiative in the U.S. The Project was launched from a seed grant competition at the 2013 Growing the Impact Economy summit at Harvard University, in which the Center successfully competed. In its initial phase, the Project is providing research and coordination support to help the FSMI Council develop the survey instrument and taxonomy of for-benefit organizations. The Project will develop a public research database of for-benefit organizations and fourth sector support organizations in the U.S., modeled after the Center's highly respected database of U.S. nonprofits, the National Center for Charitable Statistics, leveraging both its technical infrastructure and its software and public access tools. The Center then plans to analyze the data to compile and disseminate reports that provide insights into the growth, activities, models and trends in the fourth sector.
